Cruising the Caribbean on a Party Ship

So you are thinking of taking a cruise. A word of advice. Make it a caribbean cruise. I’ve been on close to two hundred cruises and the three things I tell all my friends are “choose the right ship”, “choose the best destination” and “choose the best companion”. The first and third are third are interchangeable. I have friends I travel with for fun. Then there are friends I cruise with for relaxation. And never the twain shall meet.

The hardest part of a cruise is the research. Believe me. I do this for a living and because of people like me writing blogs like this, I think sometimes decisions are actually harder rather than easier. There is just so, so much information on cruise holidays that perhaps there is now too much choice. So to that end, let me now add to the confusion.

Let’s Party

I booked my caribbean cruise with Carnival Liberty. It’s known as the “fun ship”. Which is bit of an understatement. It’s probably more fun packed into seven days than I’ve had in my entire life. That’s a whole lotta fun! We were due to sail around the caribbean for a week. I had left the family behind. And I was now a twenty something year-old again. Heck, let’s not be an old fuddy-duddy. I chose to be more like a teenager.  The ship attracts a profile of cruiser slightly different from your average. There are no mobility scooters. No retirees. It’s high school kids, honeymooners, college graduates, and families. The ship is an absolute monster. It will carry over three and a half thousand passengers. It’s got more than twelve hundred crew on board and had dozens of bars, restaurants, pools and snack bars on it’s nine decks. The main pool is overlooked by a gigantic television screen where at night time you can enjoy cinema under the stars and below that there is an all night dance club featuring bands and DJ’s.

It’s a full-on week and after it you may need another holiday if you know what I mean. Perhaps the pretence of being a teenager once again didn’t fit with my physical prowess, but I certainly gave it my best shot. For kids young and old there is a gigantic slice at a crazy angle that splashes right next to the pool. There is gym next door. And next to that a casino.

And to not mention the food would be near on impossible. The food and the drink are in limitless supply. It’s hard to imagine or even describe the never ending supply of buffets which begin with breakfast and then turn into lunch which turns into dinner which turns into supper and then just keeps going. There must be a small army of kitchen staff behind the scenes preparing this mountain of food.

But the food and drink is just one of so, so many attractions of a caribbean cruise holiday on board the Carnival Liberty.

We have tonnes of advice for you on what works based on years of experience. So here goes…

Roll your clothes

This works a treat. When you roll it saves tonnes of space. You don’t need to roll everything. But it really works on t-shirts and jeans.

Pack an empty bag

A tote bag is essential. It’s great for small items. And you can carry your toiletries in it. It’s not great for dirty laundry as it’s too small. And of course if you end up buying lots of goodies, you will need somewhere to carry them.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

I hate to use the term but, Norwegian Cruise Lines are so “on-trend” at the moment. And it’s not hard to see why with their offerings and itineraries. The Baltic sea is surrounded by numerous historic cities. Dating back to the medieval traders of the Hanseatic ports, the Baltic has the cities of Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen all on it’s doorstep. St Petersburg is a city dotted with fairy tale towers and historic treasures from the Tzars of old. Scandinavia is rich in architecture and crisp clear waters lapping on mountainous terrain. You might also like to visit beautiful Gdansk in Poland or historic Berlin. Regular cruise departures from ports in the UK, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Copenhagen will take you on a week-long visit around the Baltic.

Norwegian Fjords

Cruises departing from Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Hamburg and the UK generally are for 7 nights. The Norwegian fjords is hugely popular tour with cruises calling at the cities of Stavanger and Bergen. The cruise then continues into breathtaking fjords with ice mountains towering over picturesque village such as Geirangerfjord and Hardangerfjord. Here you will witness a world of waterfalls, ice mountains and shimmering glaciers.

Iceland and Western Europe

There are numerous routes to choose from. Some may follow the English coast via Wales, Ireland and Scotland calling at the cities of Dublin, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh with some lines calling further afield to Guernsey, Jersey and the Scilly Isles. Another popular route is to skirt the coastline of Western Europe calling at major cities such as Amsterdam, London, Barcelona and Lisbon in Portugal. Some cruises go as far as the outer Hebrides, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and also the Irish coastline with visits to Cork and Galway along the way.

Nipping at the heels of the big boys is Norwegian Cruise Line. Not quite there yet, but dogged and determined, Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL for short, are the new kids on the block. They offer a fun filled holiday that just can’t be beaten.

NCL have actually been around since 1966. Starting out as a budget cruise line, the NCL profile was boosted in the late ‘90s with a make-over and a fleet of spanking new megaships. Nowadays, Norwegian Cruise Line have a fleet to match any of the big players and yet still offer the fun and casual holiday experience which they were originally known for. The look is different to how you might expect a cruise ship to be, with a novel hipster approach to things like lighting and decor. But it’s as much fun and you could wish for with an onboard dining and entertainment experience better than most. There tends to be more young couples and younger families on board a Norwegian Cruise compared to the other cruise lines. Maybe it’s the big kids in all of us attracted to things like the oversized slides, outdoor discos, and luminous bowling alleys. But it’s more likely because of the cheaper prices and the fact the itinerary seems to have been drawn up with young families in mind. Norwegian Cruises have become known for their vast array of dining options as well as their casual cruising approach. The casual cruising thing is trending in the industry with more of an emphasis on casual dining, casual clothing and just a less formal atmosphere in general. Guests can eat whenever they want, with whomever they want. As opposed to having to sit with the same diners each and every night on other cruise lines. There are also a dozen or more different restaurants to pick and choose from on most NCL ships.

A Cruise To New York From Ireland

When it comes to ports to visit, there are ports and then there are ports! When it comes to cities, there are cities and there is New York! When you first lay your eyes on the Big Apple from the deck of a cruise ship, there are pretty much no words to describe the feeling of awe. It was my first ever transatlantic cruise and I can barely do it justice with my limited vocabulary but let just say I was pretty much trembling with excitement.

New York City is the most awe inspiring sight to behold. It has just about something for everyone. As cruise holidays go New York City is a spectacular choice to cruise to from Ireland. A day or two spent wandering around the Big Apple is the ideal way to travel. If you are into theatre, shopping, culture, food, people watching or just soaking up the amazing skyline there is so much to see and do. It’s quite easy to forget that you are on this wonderful big ship waiting back in the harbour. It almost seems to play second fiddle to the enjoyment of being on board a cruise. And that’s what makes a cruise to New York so special.

So Good They Named It Twice

The diversity is perhaps best explored from a ship, ironically. When visiting New York I can strongly recommend a cruise of the port of New York. The river is the lifeblood of the city. You can book a ferry to take you around the island of Manhattan. The hop-on hop-off nature of the ferry allows you to explore Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens. It’s a beautiful way to explore the city.

I can strongly recommend visiting Times Square, soaking up the lights and buzz and just eating pizza while people watching. Well, pizza or a hamburger. It is New York after all. Take a trip down Broadway past Madison Square Garden and fall in love with  the city that’s so good they named it twice. And it’s easy to see why they fell in love with it. Tje fashion, culture and diversity makes this the ultimate melting pot of cultures. For more last minute deals and cruise special offers you can find out more at http://www.cruiseparadise.ie
